Helping Out the Greater Los Angeles Area One neighborhood at a Time

What We do

Venice Church is putting God’s love into action by partnering with eight other local churches and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles to build a home in Culver City for a family in need of a safe, affordable place to live. A total of 10 Habitat homes will be built on the 4000 block of Globe Ave. We expect to begin building the house in the Summer of 2017. Our coalition of churches, known as the Westside Church Coalition, has collectively raised more than $137,000 toward the $150,000 needed to purchase the building materials. Please consider making a donation or volunteering to build the home with us.

Who Gets These Homes?

Habitat provides a “hand-up not a hand-out”. Families apply to buy the homes. Families must be first-time homeowners, meet income guidelines, have good credit and demonstrate their ability to pay a mortgage. Families selected are required to attend financial education programs. The families must contribute a down payment between 1-3% of the sales price of the home as well as contribute “sweat equity” which is 500 hours of labor while the home is being built. The property is sold to the families at no profit and is financed with affordable, no interest loans that are no more than 30-35% of their income.

BeING A Part of Something More

Affordable housing is a challenge on the Westside impacting families within our congregation and in the surrounding community. Some are living in unsafe and overcrowded situations. To respond to God’s call to love our neighbor, Venice Church is partnering with Habitat for Humanity’s Greater Los Angeles affiliate to help a family in need. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, international Christian organization. Its mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. Habitat believes that everyone, everywhere should have a healthy, affordable place to call home.

To sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house, Venice Church has brought together local churches to form the Westside Church Coalition which includes Westlight Community Church, Marina Christian Fellowship, West Los Angeles United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica, Westwood United Methodist Church, Culver-Palms United Methodist Church, SOMA Culver City, and The Church on Ocean Park. Unlike other Habitat builds, the Culver City project is especially unique in that three different levels of affordable housing are offered. 4 houses will be sold to families with low-incomes, 4 houses will be sold to families with moderate incomes and 2 are designated as work-force affordable housing which is intended for people who work in Culver City like police officers, fire fighters, and teachers.
